Where Are They Now? 2014 Promotion Winners
In the next of our 'Where Are They Now?' articles we look back at Richard Money's double-winning side of 2013-14. @vinylperez takes a look back on our last bunch of Wembley heroes.
Adam Smith: Joining on an emergency loan just before the Play-Offs, Smith returned to Leicester shortly after helping United to promotion, before being sacked by the Foxes for making a sex tape on their pre-season tour of Thailand. Currently at Morecambe, where he's just signed a one-year deal.
Kevin Roberts: Returned to Chester in 2019, and having just signed a new contract there, Roberts spent four years at the Abbey before playing for Halifax and Wrexham.
Greg Taylor: After winning promotion in his first season following his move from Luton, Greg made his place in the United defence his, playing in every position in the back four over the next ten years at the club, as well as the occasional foray into centre midfield. Left the club this Summer after a decade in Amber & Black.
Ian Miller: Miller suffered a heart-breaking injury in the dying minutes of the playoff final, leaving United fans watching through their fingers as we tried to hang on to a 2-1 lead with 10 men on the pitch. Returning to lift the trophy in a wheelchair, Miller made a handful of appearances in the Football League the following season before hanging up his boots. Now a local football coach.
Josh Coulson: What more can be said about Mr Cambridge United? Scored our first goal back in the League, and established himself as a solid League Two defender before suffering an injury that kept him out of the side for some time. Dropped down into the Conference and helped Leyton Orient to promotion before spending time at Southend and lately Kings Lynn where they finished runners up in the National League North
Luke Berry: Left United the following season to sign for Barnsley before returning with fire in his belly and goals in his boots. A rare bright spark during the dire Shaun Derry era, Berry hit 22 goals in 16/17 earning himself a move to Luton Town where he's been ever since. Last seen scoring a penalty in the Championship playoff final to help Luton into the Premier League, and he's just signed a new contract there so we'll probably see him playing in the top tier next season.
Liam Hughes: Mr Versatile, Hughes opened the scoring for United with a pinpoint header. He played in pretty much every position on the pitch for United over six seasons, before enjoying a nomadic career that saw him play in the Scottish Premiership. Hughes spent the last season at Worksop Town in the Northern Premier League East Division where he enjoyed a stellar season, scoring 32 times in 37 appearances.
Ryan Donaldson: Hit a wicked free-kick to secure the win for United, Donaldson looked like he had the world at his feet by the time Man United came to town in the FA Cup the following season, but performances soon dropped off, and after a season with Plymouth Argyle in League Two he dropped back to the Conference with Hartlepool, where he made over 100 appearances. Spent the last two seasons in the Northern Premier League with Morpeth.
Tom Champion: Fans favourite Champs retired from football this year after a season at Lewes. Left United after our first season back in the League and signed for Barnet where he spent two seasons, before moving to Boreham Wood and Woking via a short loan spell with Lincoln.
Delano Sam-Yorke: Not many footballers have their own day, but May 4th will forever be known as Delano Day in CB5. Scored the two goals against Halifax that sent us to Wembley but struggled to keep his place in the team the following season. Delano moved to Lincoln, then on to Forest Green, Boreham Wood, Woking, Maidstone and others before ending up at Merstham Town.
Tom Elliott: A real marmite player, a number of U's fans didn't rate Tom, but the majority of us saw that he had class. Suffered from an injury hit spell at the Abbey, but went on to play at a higher level with AFC Wimbledon and then Millwall in the Championship. Released by Salford in 2022, his latest whereabouts are unknown.
SUBS:
Harrison Dunk (for Sam-Yorke, 45): Stayed at the Abbey, became a legend.
Luke Chadwick (for Berry, 65): Gave us another season before dropping into regional football. Currently runs kids coaching camps.
Adam Cunnington (for Elliott, 75): Another one who struggled to keep his place once promotion was acheived, Cunnington now plays for Enfield Town
