One loss in 17. Second in the table. Five home league wins in a row. What was all the worry about?

The U’s made it successive victories since their surprise defeat at Harrogate a week ago, and they’re starting to add further positives to performances. Having scored three in a League Two game only once in 25 games they’ve now done so in four of the last six fixtures, and they’re still five goals ahead of anybody else in the league table for best defensive record.

Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Bristol Rovers was fully deserved, and it was noteworthy for how comfortable they made it for themselves having conceded on the stroke of half-time to go into the interval level.

There are still 15 games to play, a full third of the season, so there is much still to be done for United to stay in the automatic promotion places. But even despite the Harrogate result the impact of the long run of results around it means that they’re now ten points ahead of Chesterfield immediately outside the playoffs and only four off Bromley in top, the smallest that margin has been yet.
