Late drama at the Abbey

Late drama in football is a massive inconvenience for a journalist with a word count and a hard deadline.

Karoy Anderson of Charlton is one of the great villains of the season for the work he caused in August when, following an uneventful final half hour and Cambridge United cruising to a 3-1 EFL Cup win, he was sent off in the twelfth minute of injury time to prompt a hasty re-write in order for his dismissal to be reported to the world.

That very first world problem rather pales into insignificance compared to the award of a penalty to MK Dons at the Abbey on Saturday, a moment six minutes past the 90. Sean Raggett’s disputed foul on Aaron Nemane changed the complexion of more than a match report but the post-match discourse and potentially the outlook of the League Two promotion run-in.

Aaron Collins rolled the penalty passed the superb Jake Eastwood, beaten at last in the final seconds of the fixture. A kick in the proverbials for the Abbey crowd who had been poised to celebrate a massive victory. But while two points disappeared at the death and supporters had the afternoon to debate the award of the spot-kick, does a converted penalty do much to change how the U’s had played? Because this was, almost, a perfect afternoon.
