In Robert Louis Stephenson’s seminal Gothic novel The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, the eponymous Dr Jekyll at one point remarks that he has “learned to recognise the thorough and primitive duality of man” when considering the monster eating away at the good inside him.
Duality - the idea that we all contain opposing forces battling against each other - is an enduring theme across literature that characterises some of its greatest heroes. Whether Neil Harris is a fan of literary theory is unknown, but the Cambridge United manager’s own duality has been on full display in recent weeks.
