Cast your mind back to the summer of 2025. Long, warm evenings, beer gardens in full flow, and a free diary on Saturday afternoons – maybe, at most, a pre-season friendly or two to get the appetite for proper football going. While we were all coming to terms with our relegation and starting to get accustomed to the prospect of our new division, the main thing on our minds was something not quite so new.

Who would fill our desperate pleas for a fit and healthy goalscorer?

By that stage the conversation was, quite frankly, getting boring. Summer after summer it’s felt like we’ve been looking to fill the boots of a mythical number 9. Someone dependable and dedicated that we could get behind – for this season and, hopefully, many more to come.

In Louis Appéré, the early signs indicate our calls might have been answered.
