Some sad, but not entirely unexpected news out of the club yesterday was that long-serving defender and club captain Greg Taylor would be leaving the U's.
Having joined in 2013 from Luton, Greg was an integral part of our Conference promotion squad, initially at left back, before moving across to the right for a bit before finally settling in central defence (the less said about his occassional appearances in midfield the better). From there, Greg established himself as first choice centre-back and helped the U's to promotion from League Two in 2021.
Taylor wasn't much of a goalscorer, but his first for the club came against Crewe back in 2016, winning the ball in midfield before lashing it in off the bar. Luke Berry's reaction said it all.
Taylor was a good friend of UTAS, despite our (somewhat unfair) prediction in 2020 that the U's wouldn't win promotion with him in the centre of defence - Greg stepped up superbly to marshall the inexperienced Jubril Okedina and Declan Drysdale as United finished second in League Two.
The following season saw United in League One, and Greg started the season as first choice, but was unfortunate to suffer a season-ending injury which saw him ruled out for the campaign, and meant we didn't get to see what he could do in League One. This season was tougher with Greg struggling to deal with the higher level of football, although his experience was still useful when we needed him he slipped down the rankings behind Lloyd Jones, Michael Morrison and Ryan Bennett.
Everyone at UTAS wishes Greg all the best in his career from here, and thanks him for his massive contribution to United history. He leaves the club sitting 10th in our all-time appearances list, having had a testimonial against West Ham earlier this season.
