There’s plenty to admire about Cambridge United’s start to their League One season in spite of their weekend setback against fancied Plymouth Argyle. A strong league position, some excellent and unexpected results, the character to recover from behind in seven of their opening 12 games and unbeaten away from home (at the time of writing!) represents a good return. United have scored in every game so far, and earned their place among the early playoff contenders.
That strong start has raised expectations. A lower-midtable finish would still represent a highly successful first season back at this level, but United have given supporters reason to look further up the table. There’s enough quality in this squad and enough nous in the dugout to believe more is achievable.
There are problems to address, but Harris has earned confidence in his ability to solve them. This time last season, United were still searching for the right setup, struggling on the road, struggling with chance creation, and had failed to register consecutive wins or draws. The U’s gaffer found the answers then despite losing key personnel, and has a stronger league position and larger squad to work with this time around.
