The end of the transfer window brought a flurry of activity, and none more hotly anticipated than the arrival of a long-awaited number 8. It was way back during the World Cup when Harris said quite openly that we were prioritising the search for a centre mid, and it took a bit longer than anticipated to find one.

But find one we did, in the shape of Owen Moxon on a season-long loan from Stockport County – notably, confirmed just a day after Mamadou Jobe went in the other direction. We looked and the numbers and spoke to Stockport, Portsmouth and Carlisle fans to get the lowdown on what we can expect from Mox over the season.

U’s 2-1 Reading: 12th September 2026

Cambridge United claimed an excellent 2-1 victory over Reading on Saturday, demonstrating that they have the depth within their squad for substitutes to make a decisive impact and showing the flexibility to change systems before and during the game to positive effect.

It was a royally good comeback against Reading on Saturday, with two defender headers securing the points for the U’s. It strikes me that all of the latest talking points have been about different “Rs”. Can we build on our positive start and keep Relegation at bay? How can we cope with the threat of Reading to come away with a positive result? And will we be able to get some competent Referees for the fixture?

After two away trips on the trot we’re back at the Abbey as the Royals come to town. Having played a game less, Reading sit just a point behind us, and have plenty of talent to cause the U’s problems. But, with the second officiating injustice of the week as the wind in our sails, United will hope their home record can provide the added boost to come away with a point or three. The end of the transfer window feels like a long time ago now. The summer transfer window chapter of our season is over, and now we’re onto the thick of the actual football. In and amongst a Tuesday game, a deadline day, a Saturday game, and a lot more refereeing decisions to discuss, we haven’t had the chance to bring you all the introductory pieces to our new recruits yet. But fear not, they’re on the way, starting here.

Introducing... Cathal Heffernan

Well, that was a busy end to the transfer window, wasn’t it? There was a few weeks there where it’s fair to say a good amount of panic set in across the fanbase. From the outside, it felt increasingly like we were struggling to land our primary targets in what looked, in fairness, a difficult market this summer. Especially for a team of United’s statue in League One. But like London buses, once one signing came, the others soon followed.

And it started with a young centre-half in the shape of Cathal Heffernan. United signed the big defender on a four-year-deal from Harrogate, continuing their new-look recruitment strategy that we’ve seen this summer. Read on to hear some thoughts from a Harrogate fan and find out more about his career that led him to the Abbey.

Burton 2-2 U’s: 5th September 2026

It’s been just over a week since muggedoff.com made itself a favourite phrase across the EFL thanks to a superb Neil Harris post-match interview. We didn’t get the opportunity to hear the evolution of that phrase this week as United’s manager was given his marching orders in stoppage time for protesting Burton’s controversial equaliser, but you can be certain he would have felt every bit of the injustice.

Conceding late is always a tough pill to swallow. Conceding late like this is even harder. In the last 10 league games across two seasons, United have conceded 6 goals in the 80th minute onwards, an unsustainable amount. The game management and application towards the end of games has to be questioned, but in this instance it’s hard to avoid the decisions of the referee in a single moment when looking back at the game.

Both teams came into the fixture looking to cement what had already been a good week. United were looking to collect the maximum six points on the road from two tricky away games - having seemingly done the harder part of that equation first on Tuesday night up in Bradford - while Burton were looking to back up a resounding 4-1 home win against a likely fellow relegation candidate AFC Wimbledon.

Offed By The Officials

United were minutes from holding out for a perfect week of two away wins. But just like last Saturday, the referee made himself the biggest talking point in the dying minutes of the game, awarding Burton an equaliser from what looked a certain handball. Tom, Jord and Matt are on the review pod to, unfortunately, once again talk about big decisions from the match officials, and look over all the talking points from Saturday’s 2-2 draw.

Burton Albion (A) 05/09/2026 | Match Preview

Tuesday night was lots of fun. After such a tough defeat to take on Saturday, the response was magnificent. It wasn’t a perfect performance, and it took some fantastic saves from Eastwood to keep us in the game, but we were so clinical when the chances came. That three points has turned this into a really good start to life back in League One, especially when you consider the performances could well have merited it being more like 10 or 12 points quite easily.

And next up is a trip to Burton, which simply has to be seen as a big opportunity to turn a good week into a great week. The Pirelli Stadium has not been a happy hunting ground for United over the years, and it’ll be the second away trip in a week for the squad while Burton get the other end of the deal with back-to-back home games. 5 Talking Points From... August

August is officially in the books. United’s first month back in League One saw three games of league action and two EFL cup games, the second of which led to us valiantly bowing out of the competition against Millwall. The month started in glorious sunshine against Barnet but finished in gloomy rain that foreshadowed some miserable mid-November conditions against Huddersfield. Hopefully the refereeing gets a bit better by then. We saw a host of debuts, moments of panic at the lack of transfer activity, and renewed optimism as the last week of the window brought the reinforcements we needed.

With the first month of the season done and dusted, we’re kicking off a new feature on undertheabbeystand.com where we’re wrapping up the month and picking out five big talking points from it. Do get involved with your thoughts.

What a difference four days makes.

Having fallen victim to a last minute winner from Huddersfield on Saturday, Tuesday night saw Cambridge United roar back with a late strike of their own, Ben Knight curling in an 88th minute shot to secure a surprise and welcome 2-1 victory against Bradford City at Valley Parade.

It doesn’t get much easier at this level. Fresh off Saturday’s injustice and a hard-fought but ultimately painful defeat at the hands of Huddersfield, United’s next assignment takes them up to Yorkshire to face one of last year’s losing play-off semi-finalists, Bradford City. Bizarrely, on the same night that the transfer window closes (11pm tonight!), meaning hopefully lots of action for the U’s on and off the pitch this evening.

U’s 1-2 Huddersfield: 29th August 2026

Cambridge United fell to their first League One defeat of the season on Saturday and people went home feeling very angry.

Those emotions were mostly directed at referee Harrison Blair, who awarded Huddersfield the penalty from which Joe Taylor netted the visitors’ winner a minute from the end. Neil Harris was diplomatic about the decision and directed his ire towards his own players for failing to win having gone ahead late on, saying “I’d go so far as saying it’s unprofessional by players, and senior players in particular.”

The fact that the equaliser was so frustrating and the winning goal so contentious is much more preferable to reflecting on United being beaten because they weren’t good enough. The last time Huddersfield visited the Abbey was under two years ago and they coasted to a startlingly straightforward 4-0 success. On this occasion fans should feel hard done by.
