It’s 6pm on the day of Cambridge United’s (hopefully) last home match of the season. A warm sun is out, the mood is relaxed, spirits are high, some of the players are on the pitch mingling with relatives and having kickabouts with their children.

If there are similar scenes this coming Saturday, people of a U’s persuasion being on the pitch at Gresty Road following the conclusion of the final game of the regular season, rather than everyone hastily heading home and starting preparations for a playoff campaign, then we are in for a famous day ahead.

For Cambridge United and over 2,300 of their fans will head to Crewe this weekend knowing that victory will secure promotion and an immediate return to the third tier, to which they were last promoted five years ago when the closest fans could get to the action was the outside of the Abbey due to the season being played behind pandemic-induced closed doors.

Had Tuesday night’s game against Grimsby gone the other way, Saturday’s 3-0 stroll against Barrow would have been a promotion clincher, rendering the Crewe game unimportant. Had Grimsby not snatched a winner in injury time, only a draw at Crewe would be enough to clinch third thanks to a vastly superior goal difference to Salford.

There’s quite a big game happening in League Two on Thursday night, in case you hadn’t noticed. After conceding that bruising last-minute goal on Tuesday against Grimsby, United fans will have their eyes peeled on a game that has huge consequences for us, live on Sky: Salford, now our closest challenger for automatics, against Bromley, already promoted but chasing the league title.

With 2 games left, and 4 teams still in with a shout (Swindon fans would probably say only 3, but you never know), I thought it was worth running through some potential permutations so when you’re watching on Thursday night you can have a few different potential scenarios in your head based on the outcome.

With 4 teams each playing 2 games, and obviously 3 results possible in each game, the number of potential permutations is eye-watering, so I’ve just limited it to some of the more realistic/interesting ones. A lot of this has been done with the help of our AI overlords, so if there’s any errors definitely blame them not me.

For the sake of argument, when a team wins/loses I’m just adding/removing one goal to their goal difference. We’re all quite disparate anyway so unless there are huge swings it shouldn’t come into play to be significant.

Beware the game in hand.

In the Great Escape year under Mark Bonner. Cambridge United went into the final midweek of the season with two games to play, a trip to Burton in midweek giving them the chance to climb out of the bottom four ahead of the final day. They lost.

In the Lockdown Legends promotion season that secured their spot in League One in the first place, conventional wisdom was that the U’s were well placed because they had got their games played and their points on the board, while others were bogged down by postponements. It was proved correct, teams below them didn’t use their games in hand to catch up and United were promoted.

Tuesday night’s game at the Abbey against Grimsby came as 20 of the division’s 24 teams had already played their 44^th match of the campaign. A win would move them to the brink of promotion. Excitement was high, even with the acknowledgement that the opposition had much to play for; an away win would lift the Mariners into the final playoff position.

Roll forward a few hours and the game in hand had been played without the points tally being improved upon. It had taken until the 22^nd game for Cambridge United to fall to a second home defeat of their league season.

It’s Monday night when I finally sit down to write this report on United’s battling 0-0 draw at Bromley on Thursday. And it feels like an awful lot has happened since then.

Notts County compounded a disastrous fortnight and followed up their battering at the Abbey with a home defeat at the hands of Barnet, who did enough to win it by plenty more. Swindon continued to fall away from the hunt for automatics in conceding a last-minute equaliser at home to Accrington; they will likely have one eye looking over their shoulder now to make sure they even secure a play-off berth.

And Salford stepped forward as United’s biggest worry, climbing to fourth by the end of the weekend with an impressive 2-1 victory at Oldham. They play Bromley next, who were officially promoted on Saturday evening after Notts’ dropped points, and deserve huge plaudits for the incredible campaign they’ve put together this season.

In front of a capacity crowd at Hayes Lane with the Sky Sports cameras in tow, we saw on Thursday night exactly how they did it, with a blueprint that is as simple as it is remarkably effective. It might not make for the most watchable football matches, but Bromley’s ability to cause constant threats through a variety of physical, muscular weapons, largely from dead ball situations, is impressive nonetheless.

“Big result,” growled a jubilant Neil Harris as he strolled off the pitch following Cambridge United’s 4-0 win over Notts County on Saturday. It is hard to argue with his assessment.

In the biggest game of the season so far, played out in front of a capacity crowd at the Cledara Abbey Stadium, the U’s dismantled County to reclaim their spot in League Two’s promotion places, at the expense of the hapless visitors.

And make no mistake, this was a dismantling so comprehensive that they will probably still be finding bits of black and white debris strewn across Coldham’s Common for years to come. The Magpies, who have designs on automatic promotion themselves, were outfought and outplayed by their hosts, even after Jake Eastwood decided to introduce some unnecessary jeopardy into the occasion by being sent off just before half time.

In the 65th minute of Cambridge United’s match at Cheltenham Town on Monday, with the U’s leading 1-0, a spell of head tennis on the edge of the Robins box saw the ball reach James Gibbons on the right side of the area, who lofted a cross into the goalmouth. It looped up nicely for Louis Appéré, unmarked six yards out, but the striker managed to nod the ball over the bar with the goal at his mercy.

It was perhaps not quite as easy a chance as it appeared on first viewing – the cross is slightly behind Appéré, making it difficult for him to get his head over the ball - but United’s number nine should have done better, and he knew it. Appéré turned away as the ball sailed into the crowd behind the goal, glancing up to the heavens in frustration. Alas, any hope of some Easter weekend divine intervention was extinguished with a late Cheltenham equaliser that left United’s automatic promotion hopes looking decidedly precarious.

This season has, so far, been one of many heroes and few villains. United’s form has been so consistently good that even unheralded players like Zak Bradshaw, Zeno Ibsen Rossi, and the much-maligned Elias Kachunga have come in and made meaningful contributions, particularly before Christmas when cup games punctuated the league campaign.

It’s been over 24 hours since the full-time whistle blew in Cheltenham. If you go back in time a few minutes before that, things were looking particularly peachy. United were seeing out an unspectacular 1-0 win away from home to keep hold of their automatic promotion place against a team languishing towards the bottom end of the division. A lack of fluent creative output but defensively sturdy; file it under ‘a Neil Harris away performance’.

Almost unthinkably, as the referee blew the final whistle, United had conspired to repeat history from a few days’ previously and concede another stoppage-time equaliser. This one was particularly costly: in terms of the league table, Notts winning knocked us back out of the automatics, but Swindon’s miracle resurrection of their own a few miles away in Wiltshire meant they levelled up their points tally with ours. This is a six-horse race, make no mistake about it.

It was also costly psychologically. Over the course of the season, every team will concede some late goals, that is part of what football is. But to concede so late against MK, Swindon and Cheltenham in recent weeks – two over the same weekend – is now a trend. And an extremely worrying one. It not only feels like a huge psychological disadvantage to ourselves, but a weapon opponents will try to use against us.

Put it this way, how will you feel if we’re 1-0 up against Notts County on Saturday with 10 minutes to play?

It’s an enormous task for Harris and his team to try and guard the players against that same way of thinking, but the Abbey will be riddled with anxiety should that situation come to pass.
